Ceramic coating vs wax: which is worth it?

Ceramic coatings and traditional wax both protect your paint — here's how they really compare on gloss, durability and value.

Both wax and ceramic coatings do the same core job — they sit on top of your paint, add gloss and protect it from the elements. The difference is how long they last and how hard they work.

Wax

A quality wax gives a warm, deep shine and is quick to apply, but it's sacrificial — heat, rain and washing wear it away in a matter of weeks to a couple of months. It's a great top-up, less so as long-term protection.

Ceramic coating

A ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat and lasts years, not weeks. It produces serious water beading, makes washing far easier, resists chemicals and UV fade, and keeps a sharp, glassy gloss long after a wax would have gone. The trade-off is cost and prep — the paint has to be decontaminated and corrected first for the coating to bond properly.

So which should you choose?

If you change cars often or just want a quick refresh, wax is fine. If you want to protect your investment and spend less time cleaning over the next few years, a ceramic coating is the better value — and it's why we include a free three-year ceramic coating with our Full Detailing package.
